Kenton O. Kendrick
ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. — Kenton O. Kendrick, 83, of Arkansas City, Kan., passed away on Friday, July 6, 2018, at Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center in Wichita, Kan.
Graveside memorial services will be held at 10 a.m., on Saturday, July 14, 2018, at Memorial Lawn Cemetery, north of Arkansas City, Kan. No visitation is planned.
The family has established memorials for the Cowley County Humane Society and American Legion Post 18. Contributions may be left with Shelley Family Funeral Home of Arkansas City.
Kenton was born on Jan. 1, 1935, in Arkansas City, Kan., the son of Henry Orville and Katie Thompson Kendrick. He graduated in 1953 from Arkansas City High School. After high school, he joined the United States Army during the Korean War. He served from March of 1954 to March of 1957. He achieved the rank of Corporal and worked as a diesel mechanic during his military career.
He returned to Arkansas City after the military and worked on the pork cut floor at Rodeo Meat Packing House for 29 years. He has lived in Arkansas City all but 8 years that he spent in Shellknob, Mo. He also worked at Enterprise Rent-A-Car as a driver for about 15 years.
Kenton was a member of the American Legion for 53 years and has a 50-year pin. He served in many capacities such as, President of the Housing Board Office of District, Commander three times, Chaplain and a service officer. He also was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He joined to socialize with his friends and meet new people. Along with the duties he fulfilled he was well known as a bingo caller for years. He also would be the first one at the legion in the mornings to have the coffee on for anyone to join in for a cup!
He is survived by his daughter, Brenda Peters and husband Kurte of Newkirk, and stepdaughter, Carolyn Carlson of Burleson, Texas; his siblings, Jeanie Alexander and husband Merla of McKinney, Texas, and Bud Kendrick of Arkansas City; his six grandchildren, Danielle, Katelyn, Leah, Ashlee, Kristen, and Jennifer; five great-grandchildren, Layla, Hunter, Lillian Grace, Madelyn, and Emma.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
