Wildcats To Play Saturday
February 23, 2018
BROKEN ARROW — Facing the biggest challenge of the season, the Ponca City Wildcats basketball team will face Broken Arrow Saturday in the opening round of the Class 6A Regional Tournament.
The game originally was scheduled for 8 p.m. Friday night but was moved back to 8 p.m. Saturday when the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association cancelled all events scheduled for Thursday.
The Wildcats, who were extremely young and inexperienced when the season began, have won only twice in 22 games. Their challenge Saturday will be to play the top ranked team in Class 6A on its home court. The Broken Arrow Tigers have compiled a 21-2 record. The two losses were to the Oklahoma City Storm and to Owasso. The loss to the Storm was an overtime 47-46 slowdown affair in the semifinals of the Skiatook Tournament. Broken Arrow had defeated the Storm 71-57 in an earlier game in Broken Arrow. The defeat to Owasso was by the score of 77-70 in Owasso on Feb. 6. BA had beaten Owasso 72-63 when the two teams played Dec. 12 in Broken Arrow.
Ponca City’s two wins have come over Cushing and Guthrie.
While the Wildcats’ assignment is a tough one, head coach Keenan Curry has said that he likes his team’s fighting spirit. He is convinced that they will play hard and give good effort.
The winner of Saturday’s game will play the winner of a 6:30 p.m. Satirday game between Stillwater and Bartlesville. The Regional finals will be played at 7 p.m. Monday in Broken Arrow.
