Garnet Elizabeth Stanley

Garnet Elizabeth Stanley, of Blackwell, died Friday evening, July 27, 2018, at AllianceHealth Ponca City. She was 89.

Garnet was born on Oct. 7, 1928, in Blackwell the daughter of Philip Gray and Myrtle Elvina Robbins Smith. She grew up in Blackwell and graduated from Blackwell High School in 1946. She furthered her education by attending Northern Oklahoma Junior College and graduated with an associate’s degree in 1948. She married Bobby Glenn Stanley on May 22, 1949, in Blackwell and she began working as a secretary for the Blackwell Zinc Company. While raising her son, she returned to the home to care for her family. In the 1960s she worked as the church secretary at First Presbyterian Church in Blackwell. In 1970 she continued as a secretary for Equity Insurance Company until the company closed and she retired in 1990. Her husband preceded her in death on May 20, 1994 and she continued to make Blackwell her home. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Presbyterian Women’s Group. She also held membership in the Eastern Star, Domestic Science Club, National Association of Retired Federal Employees and A.A.R.P. She served in the gift shop and as a volunteer at Blackwell Regional Hospital. She enjoyed fishing, playing card games with friends and traveling to Colorado. She also loved going to the beautician for her hairstyling and visiting with the women there.

She is survived by her son, Glen Stanley and wife Teresa, of Blackwell and two grandsons, Philip Stanley, of Tulsa and Kevin Stanley, of Blackwell.

She was also preceded in death by her parents.

A service is scheduled for 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 1 at First Presbyterian Church in Blackwell with the Rev. Karen Rogers officiating. Burial will follow in Blackwell Cemetery.

Casket bearers will be Ed Urban, Chris Wieland, Don Roark, Tim Urban, David Corneil and Doug Bathurst.

Honorary casket bearers will be Jim Gooden, Darrell Colvin, Bill McKenzie, Max and Carolyn Moore, Joyce Stanley, Connie and Gary Finley, Joan Corneil, Stacy Corneil, Lennie DeBoard and Susan and Darrel Jelsma.

A memorial has been established in her honor with First Presbyterian Church in c/o Roberts and Son Funeral Home, 120 W. Padon, Blackwell, OK 74631.

The family will be at the funeral home to greet friends from 7-8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 31.
