Bucs Defeat Blackwell 23-17

BLACKWELL — In a season-opening game for bragging rights in the neighborhood, the Tonkawa Buccaneers picked up a hard-earned 23-17 victory.
The game was a typical first-game scenario for both teams. There were plenty of illegal procedure penalties as both teams showed some difficulty in getting organized at the line of scrimmage. And there were some turnovers—five fumbles and an interception. All the fumbles led to turnovers. Some of the turnovers were costly.
Blackwell took the lead early as Carson Turner kicked a 26-yard field goal in the first quarter. The field goal was the only scoring of the period.
Both teams scored a touchdown in the second period.

Wildcat Football Teams Participate in Scrimmage

The Ponca City Wildcats football teams Friday participated in their first competition of the 2018 season against players wearing a different uniform.
The Wildcats were part of a five-school scrimmage held at the Pioneer Stadium in Stillwater. Besides Ponca City there were teams from Yukon, Putnam City North, Norman and Stillwater.
Ninth graders scrimmaged first at 5 p.m., junior varsity teams worked out at 6 p.m. and then the varsity teams went at each other at 7 p.m.
New Wildcat mentor Scott Harmon expressed pleasure at what he saw from his teams.
“I was pretty pleased at the first scrimmage,” he said.
“The kids played hard and are learning our system and schemes. Seeing a lot of teams last night was very good for our evaluation process.
“I think the biggest thing the kids learned last night was how good of shape we have to be in to play both ways as needed.
“I am really proud of the effort and attitude of the team.”
The Wildcats will go back to the practice field Monday and then will have a scrimmage Thursday with Bristow coming to Sullins Stadium.
The season is scheduled to get underway for real at 7 p.m. Aug. 31 as old rival Enid visits Sullins Stadium.
